Trichocereus bridgesii, also known as Achuma or Wachuma, is a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the high-altitude deserts of Bolivia. Revered for its traditional shamanic use, this cactus has a strong cultural and spiritual presence in the Andes.
The plant grows upright with a glaucous light green stem that darkens with age. Mature specimens can reach 2 to 6 meters tall, with stems up to 15–20 cm in diameter. It typically has 5 to 7 broad ribs with noticeable horizontal depressions above each areole.
Spines are honey to brown in color, occurring in groups of up to four, and can reach lengths of 6 to 10 cm. These spines are highly effective for natural defense and are even used in Bolivia as living fences or deterrents on walls and rooftops.
In summer, T. bridgesii produces large, white, night-blooming flowers up to 20 cm across. These fragrant flowers are covered with black curled hairs and appear on fruiting tubes with scale-like textures.
This species is not only beautiful but also spiritually significant. Traditionally used in ceremonies, T. bridgesii contains mescaline, with some specimens showing even higher alkaloid levels than Trichocereus pachanoi. It’s often cultivated by those seeking connection to the plant’s protective and visionary energies.
Grafting use: Like T. pachanoi, this species is also an excellent grafting stock. While growth may start more slowly after grafting, the long-term health and steady development of grafted scions is excellent.
