Trichocereus pachanoi, commonly known as the San Pedro cactus, is a fast-growing, columnar cactus native to the high Andes of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. Valued for both its cultural history and impressive growth, San Pedro is a favorite among cactus collectors and ethnobotanical enthusiasts alike.
This hardy cactus can grow up to a foot (30 cm) per year and reach towering heights of 15 feet or more—some specimens have been recorded at over 40 feet tall. It typically features 6 to 8 ribs and produces numerous side arms, creating a thick, tree-like form over time.
San Pedro has been used ceremonially in the Andes for more than 3,000 years. Ancient carvings and archaeological evidence suggest it was cultivated in Peru as early as 2200 B.C.. The name “San Pedro” (Saint Peter) is said to refer to the cactus’s spiritual properties, as it was believed to “hold the keys to heaven.”
Growing San Pedro from seed is a rewarding project for both beginners and experienced growers. It is well-suited for outdoor or indoor cultivation in pots or gardens and can be grafted onto faster-growing rootstocks for accelerated development.
